Join us tomorrow at the 50th Anniversary of Chicano Studies Celebration at El Colef
We would like to remind you that the California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC), El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (El Colef), San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) will be convening the International Conference Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of Chicano Studies this week from Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 10-12, 2019. The conference will focus on the origin of the Chicano Movement and the implementation of Chicano Studies programs in 1969, the importance of teaching Chicano and Latino Studies in the United States and Mexico, as well as promote a comparative analysis of the scope of this movement in both countries.
Starting tomorrow Thursday, Oct. 10, the conference will be webcast live for those who cannot attend. Also, make sure to attend the Chicano and Documentary Series that is taking place at CECUT from Oct. 8-12, 2019.

Join our Advance Parole advocacy campaign in Washignton D.C. next month!
As you may recall, on July 1, 2019, the CMSC launched the Advance Parole Application Assistance Program to help DACA beneficiaries apply for humanitarian Advance Parole, as a way to challenge the discriminatory practice by the Trump Administration to systematically suspend and deny all DACA recipients’ applications for Advance Parole, and to establish grounds for class-action litigation on behalf of all Dreamers denied due process and court-ordered consideration of all I-131 applications.
Now we’re announcing the 3rd phase of our National Campaign to Restore DACA’s Advance Parole and will take 50+ Dreamers to Washington, D.C. during November 9-15, 2019; this includes 30 Dreamers that have filed their humanitarian Advance Parole applications since July 1 as part of our assistance program, to personally advocate for expedited approval of their I-131, Advance Parole applications.
This phase of our campaign is essential because the Dream and Promise Act of 2019 is unlikely to be approved by the current Senate, and the U.S. Supreme Court will not rule on the future of DACA until next summer. Therefore, Dreamers remain in limbo and their dire need for humanitarian travel will continue to be denied Advance Parole authorization for an indefinite period.
Are you a DACA recipient who has applied for an Advance Parole permit before, or have been personally affected by its suspension since September 5, 2017? If so, we would like to invite you to participate in our campaign’s 3rd Advocacy trip to Washington D.C from November 9-14, 2019.
REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:
- You must be a current or former DACA recipient.
- You must be available to participate from November 9-15, 2019.
- You must be able to purchase your own airfare and/or ground transportation to Washignton D.C. (once confirmed, the CMSC will cover your hotel room, all meals and local transportation).
- You must apply by 5pm Friday, Oct. 11, 2019.

A group of 60 Dreamers from the LA-area will engage in a discussion with John Leguizamo tomorrow at the Ahmanson Theater
In recognition of the CMSC’s National Campaign to Restore DACA’s Advance Parole, the Center Theatre Group (CTG) and John Leguizamo’s touring company invited 60 of our Dreamers to attend a complimentary performance of “Latin History for Morons” at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles tomorrow, Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 2pm.
The performance will be followed by a discussion with John Leguizamo, to reflect upon the impact of his performance and the issues facing Dreamers and their families.

Keeping Marco Antonio Firebaugh’s Legacy Alive
The CMSC is committed to keep Marco Antonio Firebaugh’s legacy alive as the “godfather” of undocumented students with his landmark legislation Assembly Bill 540 (AB-540), which has positively impacted thousands of undocumented immigrants since 2001.
Thus, we would like to take a moment to remember and celebrate what would have been Marco Antonio Firebaugh’s 53rd birthday this coming Sunday, October 13, 2019.

We would like to invite you to join us at the “World Premiere” of Lidieth Arevalo’s latest documentary film Alpharaoh (2019), which will be screening at 6pm on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Panamanian International Film Festival in Los Angeles (PIFFLA) in the Downtown Independent theater in LA.
Lidieth Arevalo is a Dreamer and the CMSC’s Multimedia and Communications Director who has been working with us for the last 4 years. She has been fundamental in the successful production and execution of all of our CMSC-produced documentaries, study abroad programs, and campaigns. Thus, we would be delighted if you would join us on this day to support her career as an up-and-coming documentary filmmaker. Alpharaoh is the thesis film she completed as part of her MFA Documentary program at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
