CITLALLI ORTIZ

Citlalli Ortiz is a student leader at California State University, Long Beach where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies and minor in Public Relations. Her passion for leadership began her first year of college when she was seeking social justice for her community. As an undocumented Latina she felt the need to advocate for and bring resources to this community on campus due to her first hand experience living in a low-income household.

During her Sophomore year of college she served as the commissioner of AB 540 and Undocumented students for Associated Students Inc. During this year of service she was able to represent undocumented students in many settings and listen to the needs of her peers and those who were seeking resources to succeed. She was able to organize and meet with administrators on campus to bring the resources that were lacking for this community.

She has previously worked with the California-Mexico Studies Center, a non-profit organization located in Long Beach, CA that advocates for ethnic studies and immigrant rights. Citlalli, was a key organizer for three advocacy trips to Washington D.C. with a total of 50 Dreamers to advocate for the restoration of DACA’s Advance Parole. While in D.C. she led meetings with U.S. representatives and senators to ask for their support and leadership in matters that affected DACA recipients. She continues her leadership on campus by serving as a senator-at-large for ASI and being the secretary for the student organization For Undocumented Empowered Leaders (FUEL), where she hopes to continue advocating for underrepresented communities. Citlalli aspires to have her own talk show on T.V. where she can shed a light on issues that are not well represented in the  mainstream media.
